A relaxing and engaging guide for those who love to garden, or who simply love to read about gardening, Gardening In The Coast South is a superb reference and a highly recommended regional gardening guide.

The real South
If you are a southern by birth, this book will delight you with memories of the old days. You will rejoice at the memories that surface while reading this conversational style presentation.
If you are new to the South, prepare yourself to encounter a friend and expert in the pleasures of gardening.

If more writing could be done by people like Marie, who have had their hands in the soil, we could more easily enjoy our flora and fauna. What a style!!!!

...her passion for Gardening ignites like passion in others!
I have this book because I know this lady's passion for gardening! Even though I live outside the Zone 8, I find this book to be extremely useful for my Zone 7 garden. In building a new home, her book is a "book of choice" in giving information that will help me garden more successfully.

I loved Marie Harrison's story-telling style. I enjoyed the tales of her family and how these experiences influenced her outlook on gardening and life in general.

I give it a thumbs up!

Heart & Hands: A Midwife's Guide to Pregnancy & Birth
Published in Paperback by Celestial Arts (December, 1997)
Authors: Elizabeth Davis, Suzanne Arms, and Linda Harrison
Average review score:

excellent book for midwifery students
Newly revised, this book is an old friend of mine. One of the first midwifery books I read, it covers an enormous breadth of information, yet is understandable for the beginner. It is still one of the 2 or 3 books I refer to first when I need to look something up. Elizabeth Davis just revamped and revised this book in 1997, and it is better than ever, with new sections on herbs and homeopathy, working with apprentices, hepatitis and HIV, midwifery practices, and issues of legalization, NARM, and MANA.

The book is very well-organized, with lots of excellent illustrations that make concepts easy to understand. There are many boxed areas for quick reference on herbs, and issues for pregnant women reading the book. These include questions to ask a potential midwife, self-care in pregnancy, danger signs in pregnancy, and many more. I recommend this book to consumers as well as midwives, as I think educating yourself during your pregnancy is very important, and this book is a wonderful resource.

My only criticism with the book is that the information is not very well documented- Davis will mention that research has found such-and-such, but doesn't cite the researcher or where it was published.

A Beautiful book promoting the essence of Midwifery
This tender book has given me, as a student Nurse-Midwife, a precious insight to the essence of Midwifery that has gotten lost for some. In the midst of Midwifery school where details on the hows of birth are heavily concentrated on I pick up this book when I need to 'feel' that deep-seeded passion that Midwives have for their careers and their precious patients. The text is simply written, but also complex in its coverage of many aspects of birth. Ms. Davis does a fantastic job giving an explanation to the psychological and mystical events surrounding birth. Thank goodness that this sister Midwife shares her insight and experience with those of us who are doing everything we can to learn this challenging information.

Amazingly helpful!
This *textbook* is awesome. There is so much information in here, do not borrow this book from your library! Purchasing this wonderfully helpful book is the only way to go. You won't be sorry! There are so many pictures, drawings and exemplary descriptions to assist you in your lifetime learning of this 'calling' - midwifery care and assistance.

If you're a doula - you want this book. If you're a childbirth educator - you want this book. If you're an aspiring midwife of any kind - you want this book. If you're a mother, a grandmother, an expectant parent, or a natural childbirth advocate - you too, want this book!

Guiding you through prenatal care, problems during pregnancy, the birth process, complications during labor, postpartum care for mothers and babies - this guide will last many, many lifetimes over. Included also, is information about becoming a midwife, and even setting up your own practice - or finding the right careeer route for yourself.

This is a timeless piece of artwork! Enjoy!

Thank to all readers for reading Italian literature
Thank to all the readers for having read an Italian book, and above all one of the best authors on this century in Italy. When I was a teenager I read mots of Morante's books and I can say that she was one of the best writers I have ever met in my readings. May I suggest to all of you to read (if you find a transaltion in your language) "L'isola di Arturo" (Arthur's Island) and above all "Menzogna e sortilegio" (Lie and witchcraft). Sorry, but the translations of the titles are improvised and I am not sure they are correct at all!

Read 1st Edition
I discovered this book in 1977 when I somehow found myself with a first edition. It has stayed with me all that time. I was wondering if it still was in print and looked it up here. Amazing that over all these 26 years it's still in print and getting 5 stars from everyone. Time to read it again.

History: A Novel by Elsa Morante
The best book I've read in many years! Stayed with me for weeks after reading it. Definitely a keeper!

A Lonely Kind of War: Forward Air Controller, Vietnam
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (September, 1990)
Authors: Marshall Harrison and Paul McCarthy
Average review score:

Climb Into the Cockpit and Strap-In.
Outstanding first person narrative seats readers in the cockpit of Vietnam era reconnaissance aircraft involved in combat. Absolutely one of the five best books I've ever read. Harrison opens Chapter 1 by emersing the reader into the radio chatter of an aircraft fire mission. His flowing and economical style enable the reader to actually place themselves into the scenario. From there the book continues to ride like a modern day Clancy novel. From directing fire missions deep within North Vietnam and Laos to dropping commando teams by parachute behind enemy lines in light aircraft only designed for a pilot and observer. Harrison spins his tales as if he's sitting comfortably in your living room tracing flight manuevers through the air with his hands. A fabulous book that, unfortunately, read too quickly. May slow down some readers who are not famililar with aviation technical terms or slang.

simply excellent - both in style and content
This has to be one of the best books on combat aviation in Viet Nam. I've read a lot of book about this subject, but Harrison's ability to describe the life of a Forward Air Controller left me wishing that he had put more in print. There is almost a kinship that develops during the book - you share the sweat and I have seen no one else write about aerial manuevers as vividly. His style sems to assume that the reader has a basic understanding of aviation; he gives vivid descriptions of flight without excessive digression to explain the manuevers.

I won't loan this book to anyone.

Buy it.

The Definitive Book on the FAC
I cannot count how many times I've read this book. A very well written account of the making of a forward air controller (FAC) and his tour of duty in Vietnam. This book is filled with non-stop aerial combat interspersed with wit and humor. I swear you can hear the engines, the explosions, the radio chatter and the myriad sounds of aerial combat. This is the definitive book on the FAC. Harrison's vividly writes about the inter-service rivalries, fighter pilot and elite unit culture. Vietnam had them all, from the ticket punchers to the true professionals, the "conscientious objectors" to the patriots, balls-out young men and know it alls, politicians and name dropers, clowns and cowboys, the scared and all too brave. Harrison's seen and flown with all of them. You will not put this book down once you start reading it. Harrison will hold you in suspense screaming, laughing and dying over and over. You will read it again and again in between browsing the web about the FAC and that "war" fought on the other side of the fence in Laos. How good is this book? I have seen precious copies churned out of copier machines circulating with pilots of the Philippine Air Force, 15th Strike Wing, one of the few users of the OV-10 Bronco in combat in the 21st century. This book should be made into a movie.

Picture Perfect (Arabesque)

Author: Shirley Harrison

AN EXCELLENT ROMANTIC MYSTERY!!!
THIS BOOK IS SIMPLY FANTASTIC. ONCE I STARTED TO READ IT, I COULD HARDLY PUT IT DOWN. THE CHARACTERS OF JUSTIN AND DAVINA WERE VERY MUCH LIKE A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN ONLY THEY DIDN'T KNOW IT. THE AUTHOR REALLY KNEW HOW TO DRAW YOU INTO THE LIVES OF THE CHARACTERS AND MAKE YOU BEG FOR MORE!!! THE PLOT TWISTS WERE SO GREAT. WHEN YOU THOUGHT THAT YOU HAD THE PLOT FIGURED OUT, IT WAS NOT AT ALL WHAT YOU THOUGHT. THE MYSTERY AND THE ROMANCE WAS SO INTENSE THAT I FOUND MYSELF STAYING UP LATE BECAUSE I WANTED TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT. (THIS COMING FROM FROM A PERSON WHO HAD TO BE UP AT 4 A.M.).

JOB WELL DONE, MS. HARRISON. CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK. HURRY!!!!

Captured my soul and imagination!
This is such a wonderful book on so many levels. Harrison creates characters with whom one can truly identify. I found myself unable to put the book down--the suspense is so captivating that I was drawn to keep reading and reading and reading. I found myself experiencing the same emotions as Davina...the passion, the mystery, and the intrigue make it one of the best works I have read to date. Harrison's first work will surely capture the heart of any reader...I hope there is a sequel to continue this incredible story.

Wonderful
When you read Picture Perfect, you can't believe that this is the work of a first time author. It was an absolutely good book. Romantic suspense is always a plus in my book. The storyline was convincing and the characters quite real flaws and all.

I truly enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend for others to read the book. I was quite impressed with Ms. Harrison's work, especially since this is her first work of fiction. It was well written and believable.

I just can't say enough about the book, except to say that I enjoyed it, and that I am looking forward to her next work to be released.

NightMusic
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (October, 2002)
Author: Harrison Gradwell Slater
Average review score:

Mozart, mystery and intrigue
"Night Music" spoon feeds the reader fascinating details about Mozart's life in delicious bites. I enjoyed the roller coaster ride through glittering European cities as the duel story line was revealed. Harrison Slater weaves an exciting web of Mozart, mystery, murder and intrigue. I was impressed with the authors' knowledge of Mozart and his ability to keep me in suspense as the plot unfolds.

Being an Amature Mozart Lover...
I picked up this novel, not having any training in classical music. I just know good, soul-stirring music when I hear it and Mozart's compositions "do it" for me. What does this have to do with this book you might say? Remarkably enough, Slater manages to describe, in the written word, what one experiences when listening to moving Mozart piece. The love and passion for Mozart and his works, results in some interesting, even bizzare human behavior on the part of the characters in the book. One wonders how evil, murder and mystery can evolve out of something so beautiful as "Night Music". Harrison Slater's book shows us how.
Highly recommended, whether you're an expert on Mozart, or a novice like myself.

Slater's moving Mozart mystery moves
NightMusic is a novel/mystery for everyone. It's Mathew's story about Mozart, Milan and so much more. The protagonist, Mathew Pierce, after finding what appears to be Mozart's diaries, travels in Europe, a guest of his mentor, Vicomte Rene de Laguerelle. In the process Pierce finds out much about the diary and more about Mozart's world. The plot moves quickly thanks to the authors writing style. Along the way you meet some interesting, sometimes wealthy, sometimes talented, and often complicated people some of whom know each other too well. Mathew doesn't know some of them well enough, and doesn't know others soon enough.

The novel clips right along. It felt like I was watching a movie. The chapter in the monastery in Prague moves like "Indiana Jones" in a "Name of the Rose" setting. The descriptions of LaFavorite, de Laguerelle's estate, reminds me of "Restoration". Although, Laguerelle's estate also brings to mind so much of what I love about Versailles. AND, speaking of movies, Slater ought to consider writing screenplays.

The descriptions of the people and places are accurate, detailed, involved, and surprising. Slater knows people well, and of course he visited all these places, and he shares his best research with his reader. When he talks of Nancy, for example, he has one of his characters mention "Nancy is beautiful, it was designed by a polish king (living in Nancy after loosing his throne). He uses & translates the Italian and French (and this novel is Italian and French) so subtly, so skillfully; you felt that you've always read French/Italian - even if you never have.

Slater creates many parallels between Mozart and Matthew Pierce, and often the juxtaposition of other places, people, writings and cities is astonishing. The creator of the book jacket must have recognized these parallels and juxtapositions. Sometimes Slater weaves two people and two epochs into four or five paragraphs, sentence by sentence. Not only is this mystery a thrill, full of facts, and well written; this mystery moves, and it's moving!

Brother to Brother: You Don't Have to Die With Prostate Cancer
Published in Paperback by Eternal Gold Pub (August, 1998)
Authors: Thomas L. Walker and Emerson E. Harrison
Average review score:

Good, But Read With Caution!
As a physician recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, I found the book entertaining and easy to read in 2-3 hours due to the large text. I applaud him for encouraging men to have their prostates checked starting in their 40's. Unfortunately, the book is directed to Blacks more than to all men. The reader is cautioned that the author delays treatment and eventually chooses one form of therapy at a specific institution. The treatment option that has the greatest chance for cure is downplayed. Use this book as only one resource among several. Also, I would have liked more encouragement to let the diagnosis change your life for the better. Best wishes.

Excellent resource for anyone confronted with this dilemma!
Rev. Walker has captured a very emotional experience in a concise and readable manner. He takes the reader on an unforgettable journey of anxiety; confusion; doubt; revelation; indecision and the whole gamut of emotional dysfunction that accompanies being diagnosed with cancer.

As a layman, he has a knack for asking the right questions and taking technical terms and turning them into plain, everyday language.

This book should be read by all men (and their families) who are confronted with a diagnosis or who are symptomatic of prostate cancer. It is sincerely hoped that Rev. Walker will remain cured, for his experience in this paperback is worthy of a sequel...

It's About Time!!
After reading just a few chapters of this thought-provoking and emotionally charged book, I mused to myself: "...it's about time that someone captured their experience in such a fashion that the average person could understand and relate to their message."

Thomas Walker's book reinforces the message that a diagnosis of cancer is devastating news; yet, with adjustments in mental attitudes and the support of loved ones, it is a challenge that can be understood and overcome.

Walker also maintains a delicate balance between medical and layman's language, which is a definite plus. This is even more meaningful because it is coming from a person who has "been there..."

Kudos to Walker for his courage, his commitment and his stamina in completing his project. I definitely look forward to reading a sequel to this amazing story, and I hope that one is in the works. It is definitely a "must-read."

Start and Run a Coffee Bar

Authors: Tom Matzen, Marybeth Harrison, and Thomas Matzen
Average review score:

Very good book for beginners.
This book offered different ideas and suggestions that I had not thought of while planning for my new business. It was well written and easy to understand for a beginner. I really enjoyed learning about different coffees and roasting techniques without getting so much information that I thought that I was in school or something. It gave just enough information and helped provide a good starting point for my business plan.

Fantastic Book!
Very detailed with down to earth concerns of a business owner. Just wish I had the start-up money now and I'd be all set!

One of the most
This book is a must read for those starting out in the coffee business. It covers everything from the history of coffee to suggested operational and customer service procedures. I have found this book invaluable in its scope and breadth of coffee shop industry information.

The Adventures of the Stainless Steel Rat
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Berkley Publishing Group (August, 1978)
Author: Harry Harrison
Average review score:

I own two copies - one to lend, one to reread myself.
It is a pleasant surprise when you find a book that makes you try to guess what will happen next, you are always wrong, and you prefer it that way. Jim is one of the most brilliant, principled, vibrant characters you will find. It is obvious that Mr. Harrison spent a long time working on the plot. One of the weaknesses of Sci-Fi is the lack of originality in many of the stories. These stories are all creative masterpieces. I think every writer of the science fiction, adventure, or mystery should read this book to see how it can be done.

One of my all-time favorites!
This is a book I've read and re-read and re-read numerous times. I enjoyed this book very much. So much so that I took the "handle" Stainless Steel Rat on the first BBS I was on (1984) and some "hacker" buddies still call me "Rat" to this day...

I recommend this book to any and all sci-fi readers. The later books weren't always as good as this trilogy - this should be the starting point for any future "Rats."

In short: GET THIS BOOK!

What 5-Star Ratings Were Invented For
To enter the world of the Stainless Steel Rat remains one of the greatest delights of my reading experience when I was a teen, and I am so grateful to my father for having recommended these books to me. I would now like to pass the recommendation on to the world. If you're a fan of exceptionallly exciting, creative, and hilarious science fiction, you can't lose with the Rat. I've hardly ever been able to read a book twice, because I remember everything that happened and it's too boring to consider. Well, The Stainless Steel Rat stands in the company of a handful of exceptional books through the years that have merited repeated readings. I've read the first volume of stories four times over the years and I've been thinking as of late that I might read it again.

Someone in a previous review wondered where the movie is. I've wondered the same thing for years. Well, Slippery Jim fans will be happy to learn that a movie is in the works as I type.

How To Avoid DJ Horror Stories: The Standard Reference Guide For Brides, Party Planners And Anyone Else In The Market For A Mobile Disc Jockey
Published in Paperback by Jeff Harrison & Jon Paul (January, 1998)
Authors: Jeff Harrison and David Westenbarger
Average review score:

Substituting opinion for fact
Mr. Harrison is probably a good mobile dj but he makes the mistake of assuming regional preferences (such as clients not wanting lighting) and that most weddings go 4 hours is true all over. More importantly, there are numerous occasions where he states his opinion as fact. If these were truly facts, there would be documentation to back them up. There is a lot of good advice in this book but it's mixed in with a lot of opinions and outdated information which the target audience would like have difficulty sifting through.

Must read for all brides and DJs too!
I love this book! As a DJ with 15 years in the business, the author has said what everyone else was afraid to say. This is the all-out truth about DJ myths and marketing. Highly recommend this book.

A "MUST HAVE" for anyone looking for a DJ!!
In such a vast field as DJ services, it nice to be able to find the true gems among the pack. This book was instrumental in helping me select a DJ for my wedding, and I was EXTREMELY pleased with the results. If you want to know how to identify a "line" when you hear one from a DJ, GET THIS BOOK!
